Book Review – Before You Sleep: Three Horrors by Adam L. G. Nevill

This collection from Adam Nevill contains three short horrors: a tale of young boys who investigate an old house where angels are said to roam, a house of living-toys with a penchant for taking souvenirs from the human inhabitants, and a first-time homeowner who appears to be slipping back in time and may or may not be sleeping alone.
I really enjoyed the stories and I liked the writing style enormously, however, when the endings came, they were very abrupt: a line or two to draw the whole thing together. As much as said line or two worked, which speaks to the author’s skills as a storyteller, it left me feeling (I do feel stupid saying it but) abandoned.
That said, I’ll be looking out for works by this author going forward. He has a wonderful turn of phrase and a great eye for character.
“Nana Alice smells like the inside of overflow pipes at the back of the council houses.”
