Oh, how I loved this book.

I’m going to be a bit careful in what I say about this story because you really need to read it.

However – Bo Luxton is a famous author. She has a beautiful home, two wonderful children, a husband and a difficult past. She teaches at writing retreats, selecting the most promising new authors from hundreds of submissions, and that is where she first comes across the magnetic, raw talent that is Alice Dark.

So follows a cat and mouse, psychological drama with stunning prose, deliciously troubled characters and a story that’ll stay with you for a long time after reading. When I wasn’t reading Exquisite, I was talking about it constantly.

I love a story that can tell me something about people, but it’s very rare that a story can tell me something about myself. I had a relationship something like the one at the centre of Exquisite some years back. It left me totally devastated, as might be expected, but what Sarah Stovell has done in this story is: she’s explained a doomed relationship to me, and made me feel better about it.

Highly recommended.
