It’s an album I don’t suppose many of my friends know. To be fair, for some years, spent fruitlessly searching the shelves of whichever music store it was in Exeter, several shop assistant/music students hadn’t heard of it. I suspect this is because it’s a slightly rockier, edgier Dusty Springfield than I think many people are familiar with, but there are some belters in this album.

I was younger then, with that desperation you have when you’re young – to know everything, all at once, to have my heroes and know everything about them. (I’m working on a short-story with this idea at its core. It’s hard to step away from it, even on here.) Anyway, I had to have everything she’d ever recorded.

Go, search online if you’re unfamiliar with Dusty Springfield. All of her back catalogue is wonderful. A lot of it iconic. There’s a lot of Bacharach and David in there. There’s a hell of a lot to be said for songs you can hum along to. Go on, I wasn’t going to, but Who Gets Your Love is a masterpiece…

But with White Heat, there’s Blind Sheep. Whether you’re surprised, shocked or delighted, it’s worth a listen…

Or Soft Core… So lovely and, somehow, a little bit Audrey Hepburn…
