For today’s blog, we reach one of the finest things there is: the sound of a dog, barking in his sleep.

Totally different from the day to day barks, is the sleeping bark. Doobie, for example, has three distinct waking barks.

The first one is a greeting. It’s more a spitty little ‘hello’ than anything else.

The second is more stand-offish. Get off my land. That sort of bark. He uses that one on people walking past.

The third is the bark that comes when he wakes himself suddenly with a fart. It’s a confused, what the hell sound.

But his sleeping bark, a good octave higher than his usual, is so freaking cute. Honestly, if it was his standard bark, no one would care if he started at 6 in the morning.

Tara, on the other hand, has ‘Go away’, which is pretty deep, and ‘Go away, Pumpkin’ which is a lot more powerful. But her sleeping bark is like a mumbling aristo in the background to any radio show from the 1940s. Think the Goon Show and ‘Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb.

Poppy almost never barks in her sleep. And Pumpkin’s sleep bark is somewhat thwarted by her tongue.
